The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) participated virtually in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 77 meetings last week where important issues that impact the Arctic were discussed.

Over the course of three months this fall ICC held a series of online workshops to aid in the development of the Inuit Circumpolar International protocols for the Equitable and Ethical Engagement (EEE) of Inuit communities and Indigenous Knowledge. Around 35 nominated Inuit Delegates from across Inuit Nunaat took part in the workshop series.

September 30th – A National Day to Honour Reconciliation

Today, Canada has a new federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It’s a day to commemorate the history and ongoing trauma caused by the residential schools, and to honour the survivors, and the families, and indeed entire communities who continue to grieve for those who were lost.

The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC), as one of the original Permanent Participants to the Arctic Council, says there is much to be proud of in terms of accomplishments over the past quarter century. ICC praised the many Senior Arctic Officials and Permanent Participants for pushing significant policy recommendations forward, and eventually adopted by the Ministers of the eight Arctic states over the past two and a half decades.
