{"id":1411,"date":"2007-02-08T14:22:02","date_gmt":"2007-02-08T19:22:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inuitcircumpolar.com\/?p=1411"},"modified":"2026-02-09T14:56:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T19:56:19","slug":"inuit-recommend-changes-to-canadian-environmental-protection-act-cepa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inuitcircumpolar.com\/staging\/press-releases\/inuit-recommend-changes-to-canadian-environmental-protection-act-cepa\/","title":{"rendered":"Inuit Recommend Changes to Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<strong>Thursday, February 8, 2007, Ottawa, Ontario\u00a0<\/strong>\r\n\r\nMary Simon, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK),\u00a0and Duane Smith President of Inuit Circumpolar Council (Canada), today urged the Standing Committee\u00a0on the Environment and Sustainable Development to recommend changes to the Canadian Environmental\u00a0Protection Act (CEPA) which will result in tangible improvement for Inuit across Canada and throughout\u00a0the circumpolar world.\r\n\r\nCEPA should be amended to require that environmental impacts on vulnerable populations, including\r\nInuit, be considered in all stages of the risk assessment process. The legislation should be amended to\r\nrequire a consistent, regulated approach to pollution prevention planning in consultation with Inuit for all\r\nfacilities that release or may release toxic substances of concern to Inuit,\" said Mary Simon, President of\r\nITK. \"The Government of Canada should collaborate with Inuit to develop practices that are conducive to\r\nacquiring, understanding and integrating Inuit traditional knowledge into decision making on the\r\nenvironment and human health.\"\r\n\r\nDuane Smith, President of ICC (Canada) said, CEPA should be amended to specify requirements for the\r\nMinister to act to implement international agreements aimed at curtailing air and water pollution and in so\r\ndoing, fulfill Canada's international commitments.
