{"id":1432,"date":"2008-04-09T14:31:14","date_gmt":"2008-04-09T18:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inuitcircumpolar.com\/?p=1432"},"modified":"2026-02-09T14:56:32","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T19:56:32","slug":"house-of-commons-support-for-un-declaration-on-the-rights-of-indigenous-peoples-welcomed-by-inuit-circumpolar-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inuitcircumpolar.com\/staging\/press-releases\/house-of-commons-support-for-un-declaration-on-the-rights-of-indigenous-peoples-welcomed-by-inuit-circumpolar-council\/","title":{"rendered":"House of Commons support for UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Welcomed by Inuit Circumpolar Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\r\n<div class=\"section\">\r\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\r\n<div class=\"column\">\r\n\r\nWednesday 9 April, 2008 \u2013 Inuvik, NT: Circumpolar Inuit have congratulated Canada's House of Commons for its adoption yesterday of a resolution to support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.\r\n\r\n\u201cThis is a positive step forward for Canada,\u201d said Duane Smith, President of the Canadian arm of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) who joined with other Canadian indigenous groups in welcoming this development.\r\n\r\n\u201cICC lamented last year's decision by the Canadian Government to oppose the Declaration when it was adopted by the UN General Assembly.
