{"id":1489,"date":"2012-09-14T14:49:54","date_gmt":"2012-09-14T18:49:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.inuitcircumpolar.com\/?p=1489"},"modified":"2026-02-09T14:57:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T19:57:07","slug":"circumpolar-inuit-leader-calls-for-real-action-on-5-year-old-un-declaration-on-indigenous-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.inuitcircumpolar.com\/staging\/press-releases\/circumpolar-inuit-leader-calls-for-real-action-on-5-year-old-un-declaration-on-indigenous-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Circumpolar Inuit leader calls for real action on 5-year old UN Declaration on Indigenous Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\r\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\r\n<div class=\"column\">\r\n\r\nOttawa, 14 September 2012 \u2013 Following yesterday's celebration at the Canadian Museum of Civilization marking the 5th anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the president of the Canadian chapter of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC Canada) called for \u201creal action\u201d on the Declaration.\r\n\r\n\u201cI would like to see Canada work with Inuit and other indigenous peoples in truly implementing the Declaration\u201d, Mr. Smith said. \u201cYesterday it was important to celebrate the Declaration that recognizes our lands, territories, resources, and knowledge, and our rights to them. Today we must make the Declaration truly meaningful\u201d.\r\n\r\nAt the celebration, Terry Audla, the president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Canada's national Inuit organization, spoke to those who gathered. \u201cInuit know that indigenous peoples around the world face many of the same challenges and we express our ongoing support and solidarity with them\u201d.\r\n\r\nThe celebrants also heard special guest, Luis Evelis Andrade Casama, Chief Counsellor of the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia talk about how the situation of indigenous peoples there pointed to an urgent need to implement the Declaration now. \u201cWe hope that mining companies and others wanting access to their territories will pay heed to the UN Declaration\u201d, said Mr. Smith. \u201cJust as we want to work closely with our Canadian government and industries on challenges relating to the accelerating rush to the Arctic, so do we hope Colombia and the mining industry sits down with Colombian indigenous peoples in the context of the Declaration\u201d.\r\n\r\nThe Inuit Circumpolar Council represents Inuit from Russia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland on matters of international importance and fosters and celebrates the unity of Inuit.
