Living conditions for the Inuit of Chukotka have not improved to any considerable degree over the past year. A severe lack of food, fuel, and medical supplies continues to plague the region. ICC (Canada) has undertaken a number of activities in the past to alleviate the situation, including the co-ordination of a major delivery of humanitarian goods in winter 1999. A documentary film, “The Other Edge of the World,” was produced the following year describing the deplorable situation highlighting ICC’s efforts. The film, produced by Paul Norris, Arcaemedia TV, received national broadcast time during the spring, and it is hoped that this exposure will increase awareness of this critical issue.
ICC (Canada), in co-operation with regional Inuit organizations across the country, has continued to raise funds under the Canadian Inuit Initiative to Provide Humanitarian Assistance to the Inuit of Chukotka. We are pleased to report that more than $26,000 has been raised to date. These funds have been sent to Chukotka for the purchase of hunting equipment and supplies. ICC (Canada) will maintain an ongoing fund in support of Chukotka and donations are welcome at any time.
