ICC Language Commission

In the report of the ICC Language Commission, at the 9th General Assembly of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference held in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik in August 2002, the Commission recommended that:

1. It is recommended that the ICC Language Commission be given another four-year mandate to continue its work.

2. Thorough documentation be in the form of a survey and a language map, which includes all dialects, need to be developed based on current and existing surveys.

3. Statistics materials be developed to monitor the state of Inuit language in different areas of Inuit homeland.

4. Inuit proper names and geographical names be thoroughly documented and authorized by the legislative entities throughout the Inuit Homeland.

5. The legislative situation of regional Inuit language needs to be coordinated, in order to identify funding needs and for preparation of a plan of action and a clear budget.

6. Promote extensive use of media in the Inuit language and for creating language debate in general society.

7. Promote utilization of computer assisted language technology.

8. Promote development of teaching materials to be used in schools and other learning institutions.
