Job Summary

The Mobilization Specialist is responsible for identifying promising practices in circumpolar health and ensuring that Inuit from across our homelands can learn from one another’s knowhow. This position does not involve clinical practice. You will lead and facilitate initiatives at the international level that support healing grounded in Inuit culture, offer direct benefits to our communities and are based in self-determination. Drawing on examples from the current health workplan, this could include hosting a gathering for Arctic Indigenous counsellors to identify methodologies ideally suited to supporting our People, facilitating a curriculum exchange for suicide prevention trainers, organizing a knowledge exchange for the leaders of Inuit men’s groups, bolstering Inuit voices in the research community, gathering Inuit to map what an optimal continuum of services to support our children would look like and publishing health promotion content. The ultimate goal of this position see our People empowered to care for community and family.

Key Responsibilities: 

Knowledge Transfer and Inuit Workforce Development

  • Seeks, identifies and documents leading health practices in Inuit Nunaat to share them;
  • Leads communications efforts to make resources developed in our communities available in other parts of Inuit Nunaat;
  • Negotiates with partners to open promising trainings in health to Inuit from other countries in our homelands;
  • Organizes learning opportunities for community members working in health;
  • Identifies ways to make community learning opportunities in the health field more sustainable and available on an ongoing basis;
  • Spearheads initiatives to increase the level of support that Inuit working in health get;
  • Networks with Inuit researchers and supports their deployment to symposiums, conferences and activities at international fora to leverage our knowledge;
  • Uses interactions with Inuit in the wellness sector to maintain a list of initiatives that communities deem successful/want to see studied so these expressions of interest can be shared with Inuit researchers and research authorities;
  • Supports research initiatives linked to ICC’s work;
  • Contributes and seeks out subject-matter expertise;
  • Coordinates ICC’s contribution to tables such as the Arctic Human Health Expert Group;
  • Establishes partnerships between ICC and community organizations, regional organizations and states on initiatives of mutual interest;
  • Represents ICC at various tables and uses access to strategically advance Inuit objectives;
  • Links projects, people and activities with similar objectives to create synergy and momentum in advancing Inuit health;
  • Assists with the execution of initiatives that colleagues and partners are leading, including on other topics given the holistic nature of health;
  • Participates in regular team meetings and provides concise updates on activities;
  • Recognizes and adapts to cultural nuances in the workplace and communities;
  • Fosters a positive culture for change by sharing knowledge, tools and information as well encouraging partners and colleagues to move in a common direction; and

PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND EXECUTION

  • Leads multiple projects at once and throughout the project lifecycle, which require:
    • Designing initiatives to achieve goals and benefit circumpolar Inuit;
    • Mapping out steps and timelines to completion;
    • Researching, identifying optimal logistical arrangements (such as flights, venues, lodging, interpretation setups) and booking them;
    • Budgeting projects;
    • Recommending appropriate expenses and service providers (such as qulliq lighter, interpreters, tech equipment providers, counsellors, and consultants), developing their scopes of work for approval and overseeing work execution;
    • Writing documents such as concept notes, funding proposals, agendas, invites;
    • Assembling and coordinating the work of project teams, which may include colleagues or people from partner organizations;
    • Involving stakeholders at all steps to increase and maintain buy-in for initiatives;
    • Planning for safety;
    • Collaboratively identifying participants for the initiative;
    • Developing detailed session plans and facilitating sessions;
    • Assisting participants and referring them to support as needed;
    • Contributing to report development; and
    • Delegating tasks as appropriate.
  • Problem-solves promptly and appropriately to assist ICC in achieving project objectives;
  • Creates/oversees the creation of outputs for initiatives, health promotion materials and social media content; and
  • Completes other tasks and duties as required.

WELLNESS AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Remains aware of one’s own triggers and takes steps to manage them;
  • Practices self-care, expresses one’s safety needs and seeks wellness supports as needed;
  • Expresses one’s needs for safety;
  • Contributes to the development of personal, team and organizational work plans;
  • Creates a personal learning plan and seeks out opportunities for training;
  • Pursues developmental opportunities when available, such as offering and receiving mentorship, managing student staff or taking on acting assignments; and
  • Participates in the performance management process and collaborates with supervisor on the development of personal goals, mid-term reviews and performance appraisals.

Education and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in psychology, social work, Arctic nursing, nutrition, Indigenous studies, child and youth care, human services, adult education or another relevant discipline AND 3 years of experience in the health/wellness sector; OR
  • Grade 12 education AND 8 years of experience in the health/wellness sector; OR
  • Significant training on health AND 8 years of experience in the health/wellness sector;

AND

  • 3+ experience living in an Inuit setting is a strong asset;
  • Verbal and written English fluency are required;
  • The ability to speak an Inuit language (ex.: Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, Greenlandic, Yupik) is a strong asset.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of Inuit culture and history;
  • Experience engaging and mobilizing multiple stakeholders around a common goal;
  • Experience organizing events in remote communities;
  • Experience developing and managing projects and workplans;
  • Experience delivering trainings;
  • Demonstrated capacity to plan for safety and manage one’s wellness when exposed to potentially triggering topics;
  • Excellent facilitation skills, especially on sensitive topics;
  • Knowledge in one or more health area such as:
    • Culture as healing;
    • Family wellness;
    • Child development;
    • Mental health;
    • Suicide prevention (primary prevention, intervention, postvention);
    • Substance use and recovery; and
    • Communicable diseases;
  • Advanced computer proficiency including in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, videoconferencing; and
  • Ability to work both independently and in teams.

Working Conditions: 

  • This position involves near daily work on sensitive topics such as trauma, suicide, addictions, family and sexual violence;
  • The incumbent will operate in a changing environment that requires a stable and calm demeanour when faced with politically complex and time-sensitive issues;
  • This job involves frequent domestic and international travel, which requires the ability to travel independently and obtain the necessary travel document;
  • Vulnerable sector and criminal record checks are required; and
